Geraldton is only about 420 kms from Perth and with its consistent wind and swell it is a great location for watersports such as surfing , wind surfing etc. The Abrolhos Islands are only about 60 kms off shore and there are plenty of charter boats to take you out fishing snorkeling and diving.
We checked out the memorial of the HMAS Sydney II which sunk in 1941 losing 645 crew members. The memorial has a wall with all the names of the crew and a dome with 645 seagulls carved into the roof representing each person lost. There is always a museum and a Gaol to checkout in these towns.
The twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison are situated at the mouth of the Erwin River. This is known as the the Rock Lobster Capital. 95% of Lobsters caught here are exported to China. Sorry can’t find my photo of the Big Rock Lobster Statue.
Most of the Towns on the west coast have beautiful sandy beaches and Sandy Cape at Jurien Bay is no different, you can swim and snorkel here.
Further south is Cliff Head with lovely views looking over the turquoise water of the Indian ocean from the Limestone Cliffs. There are nature based camp sites with an Eco toilet, you can stay here for up to 3 nights for free.
Nearby is a pink lake so we went for a look. It is pretty pink.
Next was Cervantes the gateway to Western Australias Pinnacle Desert at the bottom end of the Coral Coast Region. The entrance to Nambung National Park is a short drive and costs a few dollars but you can’t come here and not see the Pinnacles. The Pinnacles are Limestone Spires (some up to 12 meters high) they look like tomb stones sticking up out of the ground. We took the 4km trail driving through stopping at a few places to walk around and through them. Amazing!!!!
Only a few days until christmas so we had to look for somewhere to hold up for the crazy time of year. We decided to head down to Perth the Capital of Western Australia. Did you know it is the 21st best place to live in the world, i didn’t. We ended up at Fremantle Village Caravan Park booking in for 10 days.
While in Fremantle we visited the round house which was built in 1830 and was the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony and served as a Police Lockup. The old Fremantle Gaol is worth a visit aswell , there are tours of the gaol and even an underground tour of the water canals. Spooky!!
I left Kev here in Fremantle and flew back to Brisbane to visit our kids for a week. I do miss them when we are away so long.
