From Darwin we were looking forward to visiting Litchfield National Park camping at Wangi Falls. This camp is $6.60 pp per night with showers and flushing toilets. Kev and I quickly set up camp and went straight to the falls for a swim. People usually bring pool noodles so they can swim out to the falls. It was so refreshing.
A couple of days here we thought would be a very good idea so we could explore a little and come home for a swim in the afternoons.
Next day we went for a drive out to the old Blyth Homestead which was an out station for Stapleton Station. This family had 14 children and the older ones lived at and ran Blyth Homestead, this was a Cattle Property and Tin Mine. Hard life back then.
The Magnetic Termite mounds are quite amazing, the mounds are aligned north to south to minimize the exposure to the sun. To me they look like tomb stones. There are viewing platforms for these areas.
Another is called Cathedral Termite Mounds and can be over 2 meters tall. Amazing!
Back to our camp at Wangi Falls for a swim and to pack up to leave next day.
Going back through Katherine we decided to go out to the Gorge before heading west.
Beautiful Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park is 30 km east of Katherine itself and is on a sealed road. We stayed in the Gorge Caravan Park, they have powered and non powered sites. They also have the most beautiful pool which we both enjoyed swimming in.
In the Nitmiluk Centre you can learn about the Jawoyn people’s association with the land and book all your tours here.
There is so much to do, take a sunrise or sunset cruise up through the gorge or maybe hire a canoe. For walkers there are plenty of trails to take. Maybe a Helicopter ride up through the gorges.
We had a lovely stay at the Gorge.
Heading west to meet up with our friends Ted and Narelle at Big Horse Campground on the Victoria River to stay for a couple of days to use up our fruit and vegetables before crossing the Western Australian border. The boys went fishing and caught and released a couple of small Barra just for fun. Leaving our friends again we went through the quarantine station then crossed the border into W.A. Next stop Kununurra to restock the fruit and veggie supply before hitting the Gibb River Road.
